EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police are investigating the shooting deaths of a married couple, including a deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff Department.

Police Chief Mike Olson said the bodies of a man and a woman were found in the back yard of a house in the first block of McAlister Road in Emmett Township, southwest of Battle Creek.
Olson said the bodies were discovered by a family member and reported to a 911 emergency dispatcher at 7:51 a.m. Sunday.

Both died from apparent gunshot wounds, Olson said. A handgun was found at the scene and Olson said the shootings "are possibly domestic related."

Sheriff Matt Saxton said in a prepared statement that the couple were married and the man had been a deputy with the department for 18 years

At 2 a.m. on December 24, 1986, Tina Visgar, Suzanne Swinconos and Fredrick Mitchell arrived at the home of 34-year-old Robert Voelkli in Beloit, Wisconsin, planning to attend a party. As they entered, they encountered a man leaving the home.

Inside, they found the still-warm body of Voelkli, covered with blood. He had been shot to death.

The trio left the home without calling police, but Mitchell notified them that afternoon. Not long after, Visgar learned that police were looking for her and went to the police station. She identified 24-year-old Peter Ambler as the man who was leaving Voelkli’s home when they arrived, and Ambler was arrested and charged with murder.

Ambler and Voelkli, who worked together, were at odds because Ambler had had an affair with Voelkli’s wife when the couple was separated earlier in the year and Ambler believed she was pregnant with his child.

On January 27, 1987, Visgar, who had two charges of burglary, two charges of felony theft and two charges of misdemeanor theft pending against her, testified at a preliminary hearing and identified Ambler. The following month, the Rock County District Attorney dismissed all but one of the charges against Visgar. She pled guilty to the remaining count of misdemeanor theft and was placed on probation.

Ambler went on trial before a jury in June 1987. No murder weapon was ever found, there were no fingerprints or other physical evidence linking him to the crime. A test for gunshot residue on Ambler was inconclusive.

A woman testified that she had loaned her car to Voelkli the evening he was shot and, that prior to trial she had said a photograph of Ambler resembled a person she saw get into the car with Voelkli. In court, however, she said she was not sure if the man was Ambler.

AMBLER, Pa. (CBS) — Authorities announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man in connection with the death of his mother and her boyfriend. The alleged incident took place in Ambler.
Officials announced the arrest of Joshua Trunk on Wednesday and that he has been charged with first-degree murder, and related charges in the shooting death of his mother Janice Trunk and her boyfriend Kevin Milton Smith.

The shooting took place on July 31. A call came in to police around 11:15 p.m. when officers responded to reported gunshots at the Forest Garden Apartments.
Authorities say the pair were found shot to death in bed.

Officials say that Joshua Trunk was taken into custody on the night of the incident on drug charges and has been in custody since. Bail was denied and Trunk will have a preliminary hearing, scheduled for September 15.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a West Yorkshire woman who has been missing for nine years.

Lisa Ambler was 34 when she was last seen in Halifax in August 2003. She was sleeping rough with her boyfriend at the time of her disappearance.
Police said the 38-year-old man was arrested in Halifax on Friday morning and was in custody.
The arrest comes a day after forensic searches of railway arches and a canal basin took place in the town.
Ms Ambler was last seen in Halifax town centre.
Her mother died two years ago not knowing what happened to her daughter. Ms Ambler had two children, now aged in their 20s.

On the night of July 3, 1954, Sheppard and Marilyn were entertaining neighbors at their lakefront home (demolished in 1993)^[1] on Lake Erie at 28944 Lake Road^[2] in Bay Village, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, just west of the city. The property itself abutted the shore of Lake Erie, near the west end of Huntington Reservation. While they were watching the movie Strange Holiday, Sheppard fell asleep on the daybed in the living room. Marilyn walked the neighbors out.
In the early morning hours of July 4, 1954, Marilyn Sheppard was bludgeoned to death in her bed with an unknown instrument. The bedroom was covered with blood spatter and drops of blood were found on floors throughout the house. Some items from the house, including Sam Sheppard's wristwatch, keychain and key, and fraternity ring, appeared to have been stolen.^[3]

She is perhaps best known for her popular and influential series of novels, The Vampire Chronicles, revolving around the central character of Lestat. Books from The Vampire Chronicles were the subject of two film adaptations, Interview with the Vampire in 1994, and Queen of the Damned in 2002.

Born in New Orleans, Rice spent much of her early life there before moving to Texas, and later to San Francisco. She was raised in an observant Catholic family, but became an agnostic as a young adult. She began her professional writing career with the publication of Interview with the Vampire in 1976, while living in California, and began writing sequels to the novel in the 1980s

Although Vang acknowledged that he committed a shooting, there is significant dispute regarding the chain of events that caused the situation to become violent, with evidence indicating that Vang was being followed and called racial slurs by the shooting victims. Vang, who lived in Saint Paul, Minnesota at the time of the shootings, is imprisoned at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.[1]

A shooting early this morning left one man dead and another in critical condition, police say.
Cops responded to a call of shots fired at E 16th Street and Avenue I at 4:17am, and upon arrival found one 23-year-old and one 24-year-old man, each with a single gunshot wound.
The 23-year-old, whose wound was to the head, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, while the 24-year-old is now in critical condition at Kings County Hospital.

Update: The 23-year-old man has been identified at Gerard Grant of E 80th Street in Canarsie.

The Two Cultures is the first part of an influential 1959 Rede Lecture by British scientist and novelist C. P. Snow's position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:

A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?^[5]
I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.^[5]
